  6. What is the difference in vector and raster artwork?

    Raster Files:

Raster files are made up of tiny squares, known as pixels. The appropriate pixels are filled in to represent a design’s lines and arcs. The quality of a raster file is measured in DPI (dots per inch). In order for us to use a raster file, the file must be at least 300dpi. We cannot enlarge an existing raster file without losing some of its graphical quality.

    Vector Files:

A vector file, on the other hand, is a file whereby lines and arcs are stored as vector coordinates. This means that vector files are made up of precisely defined entities, each with its own beginning and end, rather than lumpy groups of pixels as found in raster files. Vector files can be enlarged and manipulated without loosing any graphical quality.

  12. VINYL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SMALL DECALS

All surfaces must be considered dirty and must be cleaned prior to the application of vinyl. (Cleaners such as Windex are acceptable, however, we recommend a 2 to 1 mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol.) Wipe the surface dry with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

Air and surface temperature must be above 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the application of the vinyl.

Apply the vinyl using the following steps:

    1. Measure and mark the area you wish to apply your vinyl using a water-soluble pencil. Water soluble pencils are available on our accessory pages. Precision marking will help assure a level application. Once you have the overall area defined and marked, you should have a good idea as to where the upper right and left corners of the decal should be placed. At this time, take your decal (paper and all) and tape the right upper corner of it to your predetermined area. Stand back and make sure it is straight and looks good where you have it. Adjust as necessary and move on to step 2.
    2. Spray the surface under the decal with water or application fluid (we recommend the application fluid) Note: do not spray water or application fluid when using reflective vinyl, reflective vinyl should be applied on a dry surface. While the decal is attached to the surface by your tape, carefully peel off the backing paper. The decal should stay stuck to the application tape at this time. With the application tape still intact, squeegee the decal to the surface by applying pressure with smooth even strokes. Start at the middle of the decal and work your way out to the left and then the right. Note: Before you squeegee make sure there are no wrinkles in the decal or application tape.
    3. It is a good Idea to wait just a couple of minutes before you remove the application tape. This allows the application fluid to dry some and will prevent the decal from trying to come up. Once it is adhered to the surface, squeegee the entire decal a second time. Then carefully peel the tape off the entire decal.
    4. It is common for there to be some small bubbles throughout the decal. These bubbles will leave by themselves within a few weeks. If you have any major bubbles you can eliminate them by carefully heating the area with a hair dryer or heat gun, and then puncturing them with a needle and applying pressure with your thumb. Note: You can do more damage than good by chasing the smaller bubbles. They will leave by themselves as the vinyl breathes and the application fluid evaporates.

  13. Grand Opening Banners

When you open a new business one of the first things you need to have is a new sign. Now a good sign could be expensive and you might not know what you want on it at first. So a quick easy inexpensive solution is a vinyl banner with vinyl lettering. A Grand Opening vinyl banner is very effective in these situations or a Coming Soon vinyl banner if you’re not ready open the doors yet.

A Grand Opening banner with vinyl lettering is very effective the first couple months your business is open. A simple white vinyl banner with vinyl lettering, best 2 color (red vinyl lettering and black vinyl lettering on a white vinyl banner) Size of the vinyl banner depends on where it is going and your local town laws, but in this case bigger is always better!

The Grand Opening banner excites people and grabs there attention. If the Grand Opening vinyl banner is the only sign you have up, you should include vinyl lettering on the Grand Opening vinyl banner to let everyone know what your business is about.

I have been told that business owners feel there Grand Opening vinyl banner is so effective they keep them up as long as 6 months.

Like I said earlier in this article the most effective for the money, would be a white vinyl banner with red and black vinyl lettering. Some business might do a 4 color banner which looks really good, but they are more money and not needed for this situation.

Once your Grand Opening vinyl banner is completed you should position the vinyl banner near the entrance to your business. Some people like to put a vinyl arrow on the banner to point to the entrance way.

After you feel the Grand Opening campaign is over, roll up vinyl banner and store it. If business is good you might need that Grand Opening vinyl banner for a new location.

  14. Vinyl Surface Requirements

When installing vinyl, it is important that you apply the product to an adequate surface, one to which it will readily adhere. The following lists contain a brief summary of acceptable surfaces along with some surfaces that are not.

The good news is: Vinyl will stick to many surfaces. In determining whether your intended surface is adequate, keep in mind that, as a general rule of thumb, vinyl will stick to almost any surface that is clean and either smooth or nonporous. To demonstrate the necessary surface qualities, we use glass versus brick as a quick example. Vinyl will stick very well to glass because of its smooth surface. On the other hand, due to its rough exterior, vinyl will not stick well to brick.

    Acceptable surfaces

    •Glass

•Metals (Must be painted with a smooth, glossy enamel.)

•Vehicles (Must be painted with a smooth, glossy enamel.)

•Vinyl (Such as Banners, Canopies, flags, etc.)

    •Plastic

•Fiberglass (Must be painted with a smooth, glossy enamel.)

•Wood (Must be painted with a smooth, glossy enamel.)

•Other Painted Surfaces (Paint must be smooth and glossy, vinyl will not stick to oxidized, faded, or peeling paint)

    Not recommended surfaces

    •Cement

    •Raw Lumber

    •Oxidized or faded paint

    •Peeling paint

    •Rubber

    •Raw Metals

    •Oily Surfaces

These lists are not comprehensive and there are other acceptable and unacceptable substrates than those listed above. Again, when in doubt, apply the rule that states vinyl will generally adhere well to smooth, glossy and clean surfaces. Rough, dull, peeling, porous or dirty surfaces, on the other hand, will likely not produce an acceptable vinyl application.

  15. High School Sporting Vinyl Decals

All High school football, Baseball, Hockey, Lacross sporting teams where helmets. Now I know not all High schools have all these sports but they all have at least 1. When its time for a new season whatever the sport it important the equipment work and look great. That’s right look great.

In the case of sporting helmets they should be repainted and have a new team logo on a decal placed on the helmet. Now of course each sport has their decal in a different location. For example the  High School Football Helmet has their logo decal on the side of the helmet with the players number in vinyl letters on the back of the helmet. In baseball the log decal is much small and placed on the front of the helmet above the brim. As in the case of football helmets, High School Baseball Helmets have the players numbers in vinyl lettering on the back of the helmet Hockey is a little different in High School Hockey the decals are usually on the side of the helmet but the hockey goal will have the decals on the front wrapping the mask.

In any event it is good to refresh at the beginning of every new season and the helmets is the best thing to start with. Even if you don't paint them new decals make a big difference. They are the most visible on the field and prideful!

  17. Vinyl Removal Instructions

Note: In most instances, it is possible to remove vinyl lettering with no residual damage to the applied surface. While this is typically the case, different substrate materials can react in different ways, so if you're unsure of the resulting reaction, it's important to test an inconspicuous area of your surface before applying the following techniques to the entire area. The upside is that most surfaces, including vehicles, respond well to the vinyl removal technique outlined below, with no resulting damage to the surface.

(Note: When working with decals that have been in place for a significant length of time, there is the slight possibility that the paint around the decal will appear discolored or faded upon removal. Usually this only occurs in cases where the decal has been exposed to the sun for extreme periods of time. This significant sun exposure will result in a tan line effect on the surface, whereby the unexposed area under the decals will appear nice and shiny next to the faded, exposed surface.)

In the case of an old wooden sign, where the paint is already chipped and peeling, it is important to keep in mind that the paint will most likely peel off with the vinyl letters when you remove them.

The following step-by-step instructions provide a good basic plan for removing old vinyl decals, stripes and letters.

1Heat the surface of the decal with a heat gun. Then take a Plastic removal squeegee and scrape vinyl from the surface. (Note: if the vinyl is old and brittle, it will most likely come off in small pieces. If the vinyl is not that old you may be able to pull it off in bigger chunks.)

2Once you have peeled all of the vinyl off, you will have to clean the adhesive off the surface with a product designed to remove adhesive without damaging the paint. We sell a Adhesive remover fluid that works well for this purpose.

3Clean the surface with soap and water then check to make sure there are no remaining pieces of vinyl or adhesive stuck to it.

4At this point, you are done. If you intend to apply new vinyl to the surface, be sure to clean it thoroughly, then wipe it down with alcohol to insure that none of the adhesive remover is left on the surface

For most people that own a boat, it is their passion. One way to show your passion for your boat is using vinyl letters or vinyl decals to display the name of your boat or ship. When you choose vinyl lettering or vinyl decals for your boat, you should try to coordinate the colors of the vinyl letters with the colors of your boat. For example, if your boat has red and grey vinyl striping on the sides of it, you would want to incorporate those colors into the vinyl lettering and vinyl decals so that they match. Some people might use their boat as an advertisement for their business, in which case vinyl letters might not be enough. If you have more of a complex decal or logo, a good option might be a digital print on vinyl. A digital print is your image or design printed on vinyl so that the vinyl can be applied to a surface ( in this case a boat). The difference between a digital print vinyl letter or decals is most lettering can be cut as solid colors separately.

If you are having trouble coming up with a name that you'd like in vinyl letters on your boat, here are some ideas; use a family member's name ( son, daughter, wife, etc.), name it after a place, hobby, occupation, or use a saying that you may like or think would be funny to be on your boat. Some sayings people like to use to vinyl letter on their boat are "Gone Fishing", "Whatever", Called in Sick", well you get the idea. So show some passion, do a little "boat lettering" on your craft then "Set Sail", "Tally Ho", "All Aboard" and anything else that gets you away from the clock and out to sea !

  24. Applying shadows and outlines on vinyl lettering

When adding an effect to your vinyl lettering in separate pieces it could be very easy when you know a few tricks. In many cases in a simple vinyl lettering job via boat lettering, vehicle lettering or any job where it require vinyl lettering application there are certain effect known as a shadow or outline to bring more life to the letters. Sometimes the effect is digital printed so the vinyl lettering is one piece, but in most cases a simple shadow or outline on vinyl letters is cut an applied in separate pieces. I will try to give you some simple instructions help you applying the separate pieces easily and so your new vinyl lettering looks right!

First we will do a quick review of vinyl lettering application before we move to the shadow and or outline vinyl application.

1We will start with applying your main vinyl lettering, first clean the surface. If you are lettering a boat, truck wall or window you should always make sure the surface is clean. If your surface is not clean properly it could effect the look of your vinyl lettering or even the glue on the back of them.

2Then of course measure your area on where you will apply your vinyl lettering, use masking tape to hinge your lettering, after taped and hinged pull up vinyl lettering pull off backing to your vinyl lettering and squeegee down. After you have laid down your vinyl lettering pull off transfer paper slowly.

3Now take your outline or shadow pull off the transfer paper soak the sticky or glue part with application fluid also at the same time soak the surface where you will be applying the shadow or outline.

4Take your Outline or Shadow place it on the surface and if soaked the area enough you will be able to move the effects around until you line them up (you be able to see through the transfer paper). If you need to spray more fluid, you should be able to pull off your effects spray down and try again. Be careful outlines and shadows are usually thin vinyl and could get tricky to work with.

5After you feel you line them up try to squeegee as much fluid down off your vinyl lettering as possible.

6Here is the trickiest part after you have gotten, as much fluid out as you could you must allow it to dry before you pull your transfer paper off. You could use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed up the process, just be careful heat guns and even hair dryers get really hot and if your are doing boat lettering there is a good chance you are near water and of course electric and water do not mix.

7When you feel it is dry be very careful removing transfer paper do it slow and if you see your vinyl lettering effect coming off just squeegee it back down you just have to work it.

If you are really brave you could try applying the effect with out application fluid it would make removal of the transfer paper easier but male lining the lettering and the effects really difficult. Some vinyl lettering people will cut effects into smaller sections and over lap the vinyl where the effects appear attached. In the end vinyl lettering are more eye catching then straight vinyl lettering its more work but most things that look good are

  26. Advertising with Custom Vinyl Lettering

Best Bang for your Buck –Advertising with Custom Vinyl Lettering

One of the hardest things to do in business is figure out the right place to spend your advertising dollars. Even harder than that is to track the campaign and the impact it may have made on your company.

From my experience “the best bang for your buck” in advertising or promotion is the use of Custom Vinyl Lettering. To simple right? Well it is simple. If you use Custom Vinyl Lettering in the right forums you could get your message across to a larger audience than you think for a fraction of the cost of other forms of advertisement.

One way to use custom Vinyl Lettering is advertising is on a vehicle. Vehicle Lettering is what this is known as. This basically is like having moving banners where approximately 20,000 people a week view your vehicle(depending on your geographical location). Just think of that! Aside from the cost of the lettering & vehicle costs(gas, ins, maintance, etc.-which you would have anyway) this advertising is FREE. Now Vehicle Lettering on a box truck, trailer or van would be best, but your information on a car works just as well. Even when your done for the day why not park your vehicle with its new Vehicle Lettering job somewhere everyone could see the vehicle(as long as it is no parked illegally).

Another great use of Custom Vinyl Lettering is wright in front of you, no really look out your window or I should say look at your window. Window Lettering is a great form of advertisement or promotion. Even if you have a great sign on your building, it is good to run Window Lettering campaigns also. One reason why Window Lettering is generally successful is in most cases the lettering on a window is eye level to a customer walking or even driving by in close proximity. Sometimes a large sign on a building or store front gets lost in the shuffle. Another reason to use Window Lettering is run temporary campaign or announce a new product. An example for a car dealership “Newest Models in Stock”. If you decide to go with Window Lettering, my advice is to use white Custom Vinyl Lettering. This seems to show up the best on windows.

    The reasons I have chosen the above ways to advertise are the following;

1Custom Vinyl Lettering gets the message across and it’s relatively inexpensive to produce.

2Achieve max audience with little expense

3These are items that most business owners have position of.(vehicles & windows at place of business)

There is one last area that I would like to touch on that I feel custom vinyl lettering would have an impact on, that is Boat Lettering. Now I know that not everyone owns a boat or even lives near a large body of water. I am also not saying to go buy a boat, so you could put some boat lettering on it and make your business better(unless your just looking for an excuse to buy a boat). In most areas becoming a boat owner is like becoming an unofficial member of a club and other boat owners pay attention. If you are a boat owner you know this already and might have some form of Boat Lettering on your boat already, most likely a personal message. If you haven’t thought of it for business you are literally “missing the boat”. Just think of your audience on the open seas especially if your business is related to the boating or warm weather industries.

I hope these ideas have helped you with some advertising ideas. I strongly believe in Custom Vinyl Lettering for vehicles, windows and even boats.  Maybe with this help you could have Boat Lettering installed on your boat that says “PAID OFF”!

    The reasons I have chosen the above ways to advertise are the following;

    1. Custom Vinyl Lettering gets the message across and it’s relatively inexpensive to produce.
    2. Achieve max audience with little expense
    3. These are items that most business owners have position of.(vehicles & windows at place of business)

There is one last area that I would like to touch on that I feel custom vinyl lettering would have an impact on, that is Boat Lettering. 33. Car Dealerships & Window Lettering

One of the most effective advertising methods for car dealerships is window lettering or vinyl lettering. Most car dealerships outside walls in the front of the building are all glass. This is so all the new vehicles in the showroom can be seen from outside of the building. Vinyl lettering on the glass allows the cars to be seen with a message displayed in vinyl letters to be seen also.

White vinyl lettering is the best color to use on the glass. White vinyl shows up the best on a clear background. I know when most sign shops install window lettering they will only use white vinyl. In most cases the vinyl lettering is installed on the window above the height of the cars, but not to much out of eye level. You don’t want the vinyl lettering to block the new cars, but not to high where a potential client can’t see the message your vinyl lettering is trying to get across.

In most cases window lettering or vinyl lettering on windows of a car dealerships is a long term message oppsed to a short term message. An example of long term vinyl lettering message would be a phone number, hours, slogans. A couple of slogans might be; “We will beat any price”, “The Newest cars in stock” A short term message might be a sale or “now hiring”. Short term messages are best suited for vinyl banners with vinyl lettering. They are very effective for these messages and can be stored for when you need them again.

When you are working with window lettering you must layout your vinyl lettering ahead of time. You want to make sure no vinyl will land on the seams of the windows. When window lettering is done correctly on large windows it creates a very effective message and looks great!

  34. Grand Opening Vinyl Banners

  35. Mariana’s and Vinyl Lettering

Boat marinas around the country play home to many avid boaters. The marinas usually will do maintenance and repair work for the boats in there marina. These marinas should be all actively involved in vinyl boat lettering for there customers

Most marinas will recommend someone (like a local sign shop) to the vinyl lettering on the customer’s boat. This would require the sign shop to come down get measurements, do a layout for the vinyl lettering and after the vinyl lettering layout is approved, make another appointment to apply the vinyl lettering on the boat. This process could be very stressful for the customer, the marina and even the sign shop.

That’s why I recommend that all marinas, boat yards or any docking facility do vinyl lettering for boats for there customers. Now I know most marinas do not want to out and spend $5000.00- $10,000 for start up sign making equipment for vinyl lettering and that is understandable. The solution for this problem is the internet.

There are a lot of great websites out there that alloys you to create your own designs for boat lettering online. There is a site called designasign.com that once you click on the boat lettering section it alloys you to create your vinyl lettering online, you get to pick your font, color, size and effects. You can even upload your on graphic for vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics for your boat. When your order is processed it’s shipped out to you in 48hrs, so depending on the shipping method you can have your customers vinyl lettering installed with in a week.

This website like most vinyl lettering websites has helpful hints and instructions on how to install the vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics. Someone who does maintenance or repair work would be able to follow these instructions and after a few vinyl lettering installs will get easier.

You and your client would be much happier without dealing with an outside person to do your vinyl boat lettering and you get to make a couple of bucks too.

  36. Box Truck Vinyl Lettering

If you own a business that requires you to own a box truck and have not put vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics on it then you are losing money every day!

A box truck, whether it is 12ft or 24ft act as a perfect moving billboard for your business with vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics on it. You might know this as vehicle lettering or truck lettering, either way using vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics on your box truck lets everyone know who you are, what you do and where to find you. More people will know about you with your box truck vinyl lettered, weather you are at a work site or just sitting in traffic every day. A simple thing like just your name, what you do and phone number is enough to get the phone ringing. You don’t have to get fancy with your vehicle lettering, just get it on the truck.

Now don’t get me wrong a great layout and design on your box truck will always be more eyes appealing to a potential customer. There many different ways to achieve this. Of course you could do a great layout with simple vinyl lettering and 2 or 3 different color vinyls. You can also use a company logo on your box truck. This log can be done as vinyl using different colors if needed, but if your logo is to complex it could be digitally printed on vinyl and applied to your box truck the same way vinyl lettering would be.

This leads me to another way to letter your box truck. That’s using digital prints for your box truck. You might know of this method as a digital wrap.  The digital prints are printed on a special vinyl that could be applied to the box truck. There are many different vinyl products for vehicle graphics, prints and lettering which I will discuss in a future article. The digital prints are basically a 4 color process in which you could print anything.

    Example:

Let’s say you’re a custom pool installation company you could have beautiful photograph of the pool you installed with your entire information write on the picture.

I have known some people that rent there box truck space out to other companies to have vinyl lettering or digital vinyl prints installed. It’s not common but you would only do this at least 3- 5 year term (it could pay for some of box trucks expenses)

The best thing about this form of advertising is a lot of different people are exposed to it and once you get past the installation of vinyl lettering, vinyl graphic or vinyl digital prints the rest is…FREE.

So when you purchase a box truck for your business, don’t think of how much money it will cost you think of how much money you will be saving on advertising after you have vinyl lettering, vinyl graphic or vinyl digital prints installed on your “traveling billboard”.

  37. Rivets and Vinyl Lettering

When you are applying vinyl lettering to a trailer or truck with rivets it becomes a very challenging job. Even for more experienced vehicle lettering professional’s vinyl lettering and rivets do not make good company.

Now, there is certain vinyl lettering products that work much better around rivets. Those products can be much more expensive and harder to find.

    So, here are some tricks to help you work around rivets;

    • One way to help you with and vinyl lettering is using a solution of soapy water when applying vinyl. Now a lot of vehicle lettering professionals like to use any type of fluid and I only use fluid on vinyl lettering as a last resort.  If you are someone who does not work with vinyl for lettering or if you’re applying vinyl on your own vehicle for the first time this would be a helpful practice. What you would do is after you prepared your surface or in this case your vehicle for vinyl lettering, you would spray fluid on vehicle and squeegee vinyl lettering down slowly. When you get to a rivet work around rivet with squeegee. The fluid should help you keep from creasing vinyl lettering.  The fluid also gives you time if you want to pull up vinyl and try again. Keep in mind when you are using fluid with vinyl lettering on your vehicle you could trap fluid in the vinyl creating bubbles. You could get the fluid out like you would an air bubble in vinyl lettering by making a small pin hole in vinyl.
    • Another way to work with rivets and vinyl lettering is to make a slice on the vinyl where the rivet is as you apply the vinyl lettering or vinyl graphics on your vehicle. This will allow air not to be trapped around rivet and could allow your vinyl lettering to lay with fewer imperfections.
    • Some people I know will cut the vinyl off altogether where the rivet lie, and after the vinyl lettering is completed on vehicle paint the rivet the same color as the vinyl. Usually in this case they are using fluid to put down vinyl lettering on vehicle, cutting vinyl where rivet is and squeegee out fluid out of vinyl letters through cut hole.

No matter how many vehicles you letter rivets are always a pain in the butt and they slow you down. Over time you do figure out how to work with rivets.

  38. Vinyl Boat Registration Numbers

One of the first things a new boat owner must do before they go on their first ride is to apply their new vinyl registration numbers.  Now I know the new boat owners may think it’s more important to put their vinyl lettering on their new boat for their name and port, but your vinyl registration numbers are an equivalent to your license plate on your car. So, if you don’t have them on, you could be fined by your local police and coastguard.

    A couple of pointers on those vinyl registration numbers are;

    • You first must take off the old vinyl registration numbers that were on the boat (that is if you did not purchase a new boat).  The vinyl registration numbers are located on both sides of the bow or front of the boat.
    • Make sure your vinyl boat registration numbers are 3 inches high
    • Your new vinyl boat registration numbers should be block letters, in other words no fancy fonts. Your vinyl letters and numbers should be in one of the following fonts; Ariel, Helvetica, Avant Garde or something like them.
    • Here is one a lot of new boat owners miss; your vinyl registration numbers/letters should be contradicting colors, in other words dark to light.

For example, if you have a dark colored boat, then your vinyl registration numbers/letters should be a light color. However, if your boat is white or light colored, the vinyl numbers and letters should be dark colored.  If you use dark vinyl letters on a dark colored boat, they will be hard to read and you could be fined as a result.

Going back to my first point, if you have to remove any vinyl numbers or letters(whether it be registration numbers or just the name of the boat), the best thing to use is a hair dryer.  Use the hair dryer or heat gun over vinyl

(move back and forth) after a few seconds you should be able to start peeling the vinyl off.  Then after the vinyl is off, clean the surface with a cleaner such as Windex.  There might be something after you take the old vinyl registration numbers and letters off.  If it is not sticky or a film it is what’s known in the vinyl lettering world as “ghosting”.  There is nothing you can do about this aside from painting the boat. However, your new vinyl letters and numbers should cover most of this.

So get those new vinyl registration numbers on your boat and get sailing or motoring!

  39. Decals, Decals, Decals

“Decals” is a very vague word.  When a sign guy or a printer talks about decals, it could mean so many different things.  The one thing most decals have in common is that they are usually vinyl decals and have some kind of glue material to make them stick.

I will try to break down the different vinyl decals in this short article.  The first vinyl decal we will discuss is “the cut vinyl decal” more commonly used to cut vinyl letters for people in the sign industry.  An example would be vehicle lettering such as on vans, boats, trucks, trailers, and cars.  Cut vinyl letters are used for signage needs too such as banners, metal signs, the interior and exterior of buildings, illuminated signs, directional signs, etc.  Basically, vinyl letters are used in most sign applications.

Vinyl cut letters are pretty cut and dry ( pardon the pun).  They are used to send a bold message and if done right should look good too.  A great place to design vinyl letters or vinyl lettering for different applications like we just discussed would be designasign.com.  They have a lot of great options for vinyl lettering.

Another form of vinyl decals is digitally printed vinyl decals.  This is when an image or complex design is printed right on vinyl generated from a computer.  This digital print then becomes a vinyl decal that can be applied to a surface. This process is used more often to get images on vinyl such as a picture of someone, a product, or scenery.  However, digital prints on vinyl are used on complex art work or large quantity orders.

Other forms of vinyl decals are bumper stickers and vinyl graphics.  “Vinyl graphics” is just another fancy way of saying vinyl decals.  You will hear a lot about vinyl graphics in the auto industry.

Then there are vehicle wraps.  A vehicle wrap is basically one big digitally printed decal that is applied over an entire vehicle.  A vehicle wrap is the most difficult to install and the most expensive.  But when done right, there’s nothing like it.  It’s definitely my favorite.

So I hope I’ve cleared up a few decal dilemmas.  I’m still trying to figure them out myself!  Happy sticking!

  40. Let Them Know your Name

( maybe red vinyl for the letters and grey vinyl for the shadow.)  If there is no striping, another way might be to match the interior of the boat with your vinyl lettering.

If you are having trouble coming up with a name that you’d like in vinyl letters on your boat, here are some ideas; use a family member’s name ( son, daughter, wife, etc.), name it after a place, hobby, occupation, or use a saying that you may like or think would be funny to be on your boat. Some sayings people like to use  to vinyl letter on their boat are “Gone Fishing”, “Whatever”, Called in Sick”, well you get the idea.  So show some passion, do a little “boat lettering” on your craft then “Set Sail”, “Tally Ho”, “All Aboard” and anything else that gets you away from the clock and out to sea !

  43. Fan Support Banners

If you are a sports fan like myself, you know that when you watch a game on television, you’ll see a couple of dozen banners in the audience. Television stations love to show banners with a catch phrase or with a saying that supports a team.

The banners today at sporting events are really good, and are usually all vinyl lettering. Some are even digitally printed. With the web, it’s really easy to get banners or signs made for a sports event without even leaving your home!

One site which is really great for that is designasign.com. You can go right online, choose a banner and write your message. You can preview your banner/sign online, then after you pay, the banner is sent right to your door step. The only thing you have to do is get tickets to the game!

When you roll out the banner at the game, it will get some attention and who knows – maybe you’ll even make it on TV.

  44. Temporary Vinyl Signs

In a lot of industries temporary vinyl signs are an important way for a company to advertise.

One form of temporary vinyl signs used for smaller businesses is corrugated signs, known as “coroplass” signs. These vinyl signs are usually used with metal steaks to hold the signs in the ground. Some common sizes for these type of signs would be;18” x 24”, 16” x 20”, 12” x 16”. In most cases vinyl lettering is used on these signs, but is some cases like a large quantity of on type of sign silk screening the temporary sign might be the way to go. You would have to check with your local silk screener if he will do signage and where the price break might be. There is even a new technology that alloys you to print directly on the temporary sign from a large format printer. This process is new could be costly.

Temporary vinyl signs are typically simple text with a name, phone number and maybe a quick message on the vinyl sign. Corrugated signs(coro-\plass)can be used in all types of weather(unless really windy, heavy wind could blow corrugated signs (coroplass)down because it is very light).Vinyl lettering holds up the best on temporary vinyl signs the best.

Depending on how many and the complexity of corrugated signs (coroplass) vinyl signs with the above sizes are relatively inexpensive, ranging $10.-$30. each. If you decide to silk screening methods with larger quantity coro-plass sign orders they could be even less money.

All kinds of industries benefit from temporary vinyl signs; Plumbers, Landscapers, Electricians, Builders, Home Improvement Specialists, Sprinkler installers…the list goes on. What most of these type businesses might do is use a temporary vinyl sign on a metal steak and place on a homeowners lawn of the property they are doing the work on(if it is ok with homeowner).

Larger corrugated signs (coroplass) vinyl signs are a great inexpensive way to advertise for an upcoming event. A lot of towns or cities might have existing plywood structures built to rent for temporary signs and coro –plass signs are best solution for this platform. You could even build your own structure on your own property or work out a deal with someone else’s property to place your corrugated plastic sign(always check your local government permits and codes before putting any signs up) Some of the common sizes are; 2’ x 3’, 3’ x 4’, 4’ x 4’, 4’ x 5’, 4’ x 6 and 4’ x 8’ but you can make the vinyl sign any size you want.

Vinyl lettering would definitely be the way to go, maybe 2 or 3 different color vinyls for lettering or vinyl graphics if needed. Corrugated signs (coroplass) comes in many different colors. I recommend using white for most coro-signs.

In any event I believe for a temporary vinyl sign corrugated plastic(coroplass) signs are a good economic solution for your business.

  47. Van Vinyl Lettering

Vehicle lettering is a very important form of advertising for types of industries. From Plumbing to Electronics companies, although service industry related companies seem to benefit very much from vehicle lettering.

In most cases for vehicle lettering in a small business it is van lettering. Many small businesses that require some form of delivery or moving of some type of product or machinery around use vans. Vans make great billboards for your vehicle lettering or in this case van lettering. Vans are much easer to use on a day-to-day operation, you do not need a special license to use one (in most cases) and it does act as a great billboard for your business.

It does not take much to create a message on the side of your van to display a service, product or just a professional image for your business. Vehicle lettering is such an important form of advertisement for all businesses and a lot of businesses use van lettering to get their point across. Vinyl lettering is usually the type vehicle lettering used for van lettering. The best thing to do on a simple layout is to use contrasting colors. An example would be if you had a white van (which is what most popular color in the commercial van department) you would use dark coloring for your vinyl lettering.

Now lettering is not the only thing to do for your van. Your company could have the company logo on the van. Even if the logo is complex it could be printed on vinyl made for vehicle lettering. Another example would be an image or graphic. If you where a pool company, besides having all your information in vinyl lettering you could have beautiful picture of a pool that you installed on the side of the van. This type of vehicle lettering or van lettering has a great impact on a future client. On a hot day they might want to jump rite on.

  48. Design Tips

Contrary to popular belief, graphic design is not all about artistic skill. A variety of external factors, including everything from personal taste to raw talent, play a big role in how your design will turn out. Recognizing the importance of these outside influences on the success of the design process, we set out to develop a web site chock full of tools that would allow our customers to confidently create their own designs.

While anyone can dabble in the craft, some people are just better at it than others. If you’re one of those less fortunate, not-so-artistic types, not to worry. By following the guidelines we’ve set forth below, you should have no trouble designing a respectable sign, banner or vehicle layout, no matter your pre-existing artistic ability.

    1. Choose colors that will not blend together and opt for combinations that are easy on the eyes. While red on black is not a very readable choice, if that is what you want, fine. Keep in mind, however, that by choosing tone-on-tone variations you are sacrificing readability. If your potential customers can’t easily read your sign, chances are they’ll ignore it. Over the long haul, that can result in a significant loss of business. In most cases, the farther away you can read your advertisement the better. Some good color selections are yellow with black, yellow with green, white with any dark color (i.e. blue with white, red with white, etc.). The key is to choose colors that sharply contrast each other so as to leap off the design. If you’re still set on using dark combinations, like red on black, consider outlining the edge of your letters in white. This technique allows for separation between the colors and will attract your audience’s eye much better.
    2. Choose a shape that fits your design’s intended concept. For example, if you are designing a sign with long rows of text, then opt for a long rectangular sign to accommodate your lettering. Do not attempt to squeeze it all in on a square sign. Doing so will force you to use smaller letters and will result in a lot of wasted space. The same rule of thumb applies if your intended design requires several short rows of text, one on top of the other. In this instance, opt for a sign shaped to fit your lettering.
    3. Do not get carried away with information overload. Give your audience only the details they need and no more. The more you try to squeeze into your design, the more it detracts from the sign’s effectiveness. General rule of thumb: If it needs to be said say it; if not, leave it off.
    4. Fill as much of the sign’s area as possible. This doesn’t mean you should get carried away and start adding text or graphics to every square inch of the design. Fill as much of the space in with your text as you can (remember, large letters can be read from a farther distance) then get creative with the remaining free space to make it as attractive and eye-appealing as possible.
    5. Graphics, colors, borders, shadows, etc., all add their own flavor to your design. Be bold and experiment with a few of these techniques to see what you come up with; you might be pleasantly surprised with the results. We have the ability to create any or all of these enhancements if you wish to incorporate them into your design.
    6. Alignment is extremely important in a design’s overall visual appeal. We have tools that can center-, left- or right-align all of your text for you. If the design is meant to be aligned, make sure that it is. If not, make it obvious that the design was purposely misaligned. You don’t want your advertisement to appear amateurish. If your design’s elements are not in proper alignment, it will show.
    7. Our final piece of do-it-yourself design advice is to examine other designs. Search for some existing designs you like for inspiration. To that end, we add new design templates to our database on a regular basis. Feel free to modify or copy them as you see fit.

If, having reviewed all these design tips, you are still feeling uncomfortable about the prospect of designing your own sign, you can send your request to our customer service staff. They will be happy to work within your specifications to create a design you will be thrilled with.

An easy solution to signage for elections is vinyl banners. I know during an election there many types of election signs. Many sizes of signs are needed for different venues. One of the most common types of election signs is coro-plass signs. These signs are used for residential lawns, on highways, on telephone poles, well you know you have seen them. The good thing about these types of election signs is they are pretty weather resistant, cheap and disposable. They also get your election message across.

Usually all election signs is straight vinyl lettering, although now a days a lot of people will have a photograph of them selves on the sign along with there election message in vinyl letters.

Vinyl banners are great to hang on buildings, overpasses and across streets (if you get permission from local government or owner of properties). 51. Making your Vinyl Banner Last

Even though our banners are made of superior products, you will still need to make sure that you are taking proper care of your new banner. This will ensure that your banner will have a long life, and reduce your replacement costs. Here are some helpful tips on extending the life of your banner.

    1. Find some shade. If your banner is placed in full-sun, through the years, it will begin to fade, due to the UV rays from the sun. This is somewhat unavoidable, but you can lessen the effects of the sun by selecting a location that provides your new banner with at least some protection from these harmful rays.
    2. Keep it clean. If your banner is in an area that produces dirt, it is important to keep it as clean as possible. By periodically cleaning your banner, you can reduce the effects that normal pollutants and materials can have on vinyl.

A simple, gentle dish soap or even just water will provide you with a way to wash away this debris. Frequently cleaning can also reduce problems that arise when a banner is partially obscured by dirt.

    3. Keep it out of the wind. If high winds are predicted in your area, you may want to consider taking your banner down temporarily. It is very important to secure your banner in a way that will reduce flapping in the wind. If you cannot permanently affix your banner safely, removing it in high winds may be necessary.

Make sure that you keep the grommets of your banner in good shape to reduce the effects of wind. You can’t beat the elements, but you can reduce the effects they have on your sign by taking measures ahead of time to make sure your sign stays safe.

    4. Keep it out of the rain. Over time, excess rain and water can lead to fading. If you live in an area that has frequent heavy rain, you may want to consider removing your banner until the danger of water damage has passed. Vinyl can withstand a great deal of water, but in the event that you have heavy, constant rain, removing your banner briefly can extend its overall life.
    5. Keep it safe from vandals. If your business is located in an area that is frequently defaced, you may want to try hanging your banner during business owners and removing it after you close. This does add-up to extra work, but if businesses in the area are frequently replacing their signs, this extra work may add up to extra savings.

Our 10 oz. banners are double lock stitched to increase the durability and improve the appearance of your banner. The competition’s chain stitching is not as durable and if the stitching breaks, the entire seam can come unraveled. 10 oz. banners can be used for most normal banner applications.

Our 14 mil. Banners are constructed from a glossy PVC scrim banner vinyl. This banner material was specially designed for print in exterior applications. We use this banner material on all of our full color banner orders. Note: Heavier banner material, or additional grommets may be available. Additional charges will apply. Please contact our customer service department for more information Here

Our banners are manufactured using one of two methods:

    1. We add the text and graphics to the banner using a high quality vinyl decal. This method will delay the time it takes for the banner to fade. However it costs a bit more and does not give us the creative freedom that printing offers. Most of our banners will be printed.
    2. We actually print the text and graphics to the banner. This method is more economical and gives us much more freedom to create full color banners.

    Pennants

Our pennants are constructed from a weather resistant 4-mil polyethylene. Each style of pennant contains printed colors on clear poly film and double sewn on a plastic covered high strength, sag resistant header. Made in the USA.

    Warranty

All of our Pennants, and Banners carry a 1-year warranty against Fading or discoloration. 60. Vinyl Banner Installation Techniques

    Installation Techniques

Once you have purchased your banner and it has arrived at your location, you will be ready to begin the installation process. As we mentioned in our article on “Finding the Perfect Location for Your Banner,” you will need to first focus on where you will hang your banner before you focus on how you will hang it. Once you have found the perfect location, you’re ready to move on to the next step.

Your location should not only be visible, but it should provide you with a way to easily affix the banner to its surface. Whether you plan to permanently install your banner or you plan on a temporary installation, this is a very important factor. You will need to make sure that you can either drill holes to fasten the banner, or that there are places to tie off a rope if you plan to use this method for installation.

Here are some helpful tips for correctly installing your banner.

    Permanent Installation Technique

This technique will require a solid surface that is acceptable for drilling. If your surface cannot support drilling, you will need to move to our Temporary Installation Technique Below.

Here’s what you’ll need: One drill, one bit suitable for the surface (ie: masonry bit, wood bit, etc.) screws and washers.

First, line up and measure where you intend to hang your banner. Our banners come with grommets that are spaced exactly two feet apart. Hold the banner in place and mark where the grommets will be. Remove the banner and begin to drill, using your grommet marks as a guide.

Once you have completed all of your holes, you will then need to put the banner back on the surface. It is a good idea to start on one side and work through each grommet until you reach the other end. This will help you keep your banner straight and smooth. Take your first washer and place it over the in the surface you just drilled, behind the banner. Insert your first screw. Repeat this process until the entire banner has been affixed to the surface.

    Temporary Installation Technique

This technique is useful if you need to move your banner frequently, or if you cannot find a surface that is appropriate for a permanent installation of your banner.

Here’s what you’ll need: One rope or cord, Two hooks for tying off the cord. Take your rope and thread it through the grommets before hanging the banner. Leave an equal amount of rope or cord on either end of the banner. Take one side of your banner and securely attach it, then take the other end and securely attach it while removing the excess slack.

The old slogan, “Location, location, location,” applies to much more than real estate. When you are placing a banner, this is the most important factor. Here are some useful tips to help you find the best location for your banner.

    1. Make it Visible – Placing a banner on the side of your building or under an overhang can greatly reduce the ability of potential customers to see this banner. You will need to make sure that your banner is located where it can be easily seen from the majority of directions and angles.
    2. Try it Out – Before you finalize your banner’s position, try hanging it in several different angles. Then, place yourself in your customer’s position. Is it visible from the road, sitting in a car? Can it be easily seen from across the street in multiple directions? You will need to find the one location that provides the most visibility. Take some time with this step to make sure that your final location is the right location.
    3. Remember the Elements – Weather can be detrimental to your new banner. If it is not secure properly, your banner may flap in the wind, making it unintelligible to passing pedestrians and vehicles. Make sure that your banner is located somewhere where there is at least some protection from the elements. If this is impossible, make sure that the banner is well secured and that it will not flap in the wind, obscuring the text.
    4. Get Feedback. Try to find a few impartial friends to test-drive your banner. Ask them to walk and/or drive by your location and get their input on what they think of the banner. Ideally, do not reveal what your banner says to these test-drivers. It is important to make sure that they are able to read the banner as they pass-by.

You know what the banner says and your brain may automatically fill in places that may not be completely visible. By conducting this test, you can make sure that everyone will be able to read your banner, regardless of whether they are walking or driving by.

    5. Don’t Be Afraid to Change. If your banner is not performing up to expectation, a move may be in order. Try a few different locations at first, to see which one provides the desired effect. Once you have narrowed down your options, you will be able to select the best location for your banner, based on actual customer reaction. This step should be carefully documented to provide you with the most useful data.

By following these steps, you will be able to get the most out of your banner, both in actual life of the banner and effectiveness in getting your message across.

  63. Vinyl Boat Registration Numbers

    One of the first things a new boat owner must do before they go on their first ride is to apply their new vinyl registration numbers. Now I know the new boat owners may think it’s more important to put their vinyl lettering on their new boat for their name and port, but your vinyl registration numbers are an equivalent to your license plate on your car. So, if you don’t have them on, you could be fined by your local police and coastguard. A couple of pointers on those vinyl registration numbers are;

  65. Vinyl Application Instructions for Large Decals

For proper adherence, all surfaces should be considered as dirty and should therefore be cleaned prior to any vinyl application. Household surface cleaners, such as Windex, are acceptable; however, we recommend a 2-to-1 mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol. After thorough washing, wipe the surface dry with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

Air and surface temperature must be above 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the application of the vinyl. Apply the vinyl using the following steps:

(Note: It is recommended that a novice installer have a helper present on the following steps. It is not a requirement however it will help insure a quality installation.)

Have your assistant hold the upper left corner of the decal in place while you stand back a few feet and look at it. If you like it’s placement, move on to step 2.
    2. Tape the left corner in place and put a piece of tape down the center of the decal. At this time, using your water-soluble pencil, place a mark on the right and left side of the decal. Make sure you mark both the tape and the surface you are mounting the decal to. You will be aligning these two marks later, so be sure you can see them clearly.
    3. On the Left side of the decal, hold the paper and peel off the tape until you reach the center of the decal. (The decal should stay stuck to the application tape at this time) Cut the paper as close to the center as you can, without scratching your surface.
    4. Spray the surface on the left side with water or application fluid (we recommend the application fluid) Note: do not spray water or application fluid when using reflective vinyl. Reflective vinyl should be applied on a dry surface. Place the left side of the decal down on the surface, taking care to line up the lines you drew in step 2. With the application tape still intact, squeegee the decal to the surface by applying pressure with smooth even strokes. Start at the middle of the decal and work your way out to the left. Note: Before you squeegee, make sure there are no wrinkles in the decal or application tape.
    5. Lift up the right hand side of the decal and remove the remainder of the backing paper. (It is ok to lift up the piece of center tape at this time). Apply application fluid to the right hand surface. Place the right hand decal taking care to align your marks on the right hand side. Again, start at the middle and squeegee toward the right hand side of the decal. Note: Before you squeegee make sure there are no wrinkles in the decal or application tape.
    6. It is a good Idea to wait just a couple of minutes before you remove the application tape. This allows the application fluid to begin drying and will prevent the decal from trying to come up. Once it is adhered to the surface, squeegee the entire decal a second time. Then carefully peel the tape off the entire decal.
    7. It is common for there to be some small bubbles throughout the decal. These bubbles will leave by themselves within a few weeks. If you have any major, bubbles you can eliminate them by carefully heating the area with a hair dryer or heat gun, then puncturing them with a needle and applying pressure with your thumb. Note: You can do more damage than good by chasing the smaller bubbles. They will leave themselves as the vinyl breathes and the application fluid evaporates.

  67. Decorating with Vinyl

The holidays are a great time to use vinyl letters. Whether it’s a store front window or a window in your home, vinyl letters can really convey a holiday message.

Vinyl lettering, along with vinyl decals work even better. Just putting “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukah”, or “Happy New Year” shows everyone your spirit of the season.

In the case of a business, a holiday message can really grab the attention of a potential customer, followed by current sale or other important information in vinyl lettering that you would want your client to know about.

Some examples of holiday vinyl decals would be; a Christmas tree, a snowflake, Star of David, presents, Santa Claus, mistletoe, or a wreath. There are endless vinyl decals that you can use.

If you decide to use vinyl letters or vinyl decals on a window, remember that light colors always show up better on glass than dark. (The best is white.)

So if you want to do something different this holiday season, vinyl letter it up and to all a good night!
